Packing for a big adventure can be both exhilarating and daunting. You want to ensure you have everything you need without overloading yourself. This blog post will guide you through the process of packing efficiently, covering essential packing tips, tricks, and strategies to minimize stress before that big trip.
Essential Packing Tips
When you're preparing for an adventure, proper packing can make all the difference. The key is to start with a clear plan. Here are some essential packing tips to help you stay organized and efficient:
Choose the Right Bag: The type of bag you choose can significantly impact your travel experience. A backpack is great for adventures that require mobility, while a suitcase may be better for trips involving hotels and transport. Consider the duration of your trip and the type of activities you'll engage in. Don't forget to check any airline you are flying on to know their luggage policies regarding size, weights and so forth.
Create a Packing List: Before you start packing, draft a packing list. This list should include all the essentials you'll need based on the activities planned for your trip, the climate, and the duration. Divide the list into categories such as clothing, toiletries, electronics, and gear.
Roll Your Clothes: To save space and prevent wrinkles, roll your clothes instead of folding them. This method not only maximizes space but also allows you to see all your clothing at a glance.
Use Packing Cubes: Packing cubes are a fantastic way to organize your belongings. They allow you to separate items by category (e.g., shirts, pants, and accessories) and make it easier to access what you need without rummaging through everything.

Maximize Footwear Choices
Footwear can be bulky and heavy, so it's essential to be strategic. It really comes down to what type of adventure you are going on. If it involves any amount of outdoor activity you'll want to consider things like water resistance, and maximum comfort. City based travel you might want a pair of running shoes for days of long walking and then something a bit dressier in case you intend to hit some nice restaurants. Here are some tips on managing your footwear selection:
Choose Versatile Shoes: Look for shoes that can adapt to various activities. For example, lightweight hiking shoes can transition well from trail to casual outings, especially if you're considering a city adventure after your hike.
Wear Your Bulkiest Pair: If you're bringing more than one pair of shoes, consider wearing the heaviest or bulkiest on the plane. This saves space in your luggage and allows for a bit more flexibility with weight restrictions. I know I've gotten some funny looks when boarding the plane in New York wearing my heavy snow boots but they are very big and I definitely needed them for my trip to Lapland in winter! At least once aboard the plane I was able to store them overhead and put on a pair of slippers I had in my rucksack for the plane.
Pack a Pair of Flip-Flops: A simple pair of flip-flops or footwear like Crocs can serve various purposes—shower shoes for hostels and public pools, or casual wear while just lounging. I actually travel with my aqua socks as they are super comfortable, and pack almost completely flat.
Store Shoes in Bags: Ideally you can get a transparent or translucent shoe bag in order to prevent shoes from getting dirt on your other packed items.

The Art of Layering
Layering is crucial for any outdoor adventure, especially if you're traveling to varying climates or engaging in different activities. It is also very effective if you are traveling somewhere that can have daytime temperatures that fluctuate considerably. I know on trips to Sweden I've had to pack for a temperature range of -10 Celsius to +15 Celsius so layering was the only real option to be able to adapt through the day. While more important in colder climates it is still an effective means to dress even for just the flight. As with the shoes, you may want to consider wearing the bulkier clothing on the plane and stuff it in the overhead as needed. Here's how to layer effectively:
Base Layer: Your base layer should include moisture-wicking fabrics that keep you dry. Consider items like long-sleeve shirts and thermal leggings. They are lightweight and can be easily packed. If in a warmer climate, keep this layer with the moisture wicking tech and short sleeves, skip the middle layer and opt for a simple waterproof windbreaker for the outer later.
Middle Layer: This layer provides insulation. Good options include fleece jackets or lightweight puffy jackets that can be compressed into a small size. You might consider a jacket like those found at Columbia that act as a two in one style with an inner jacket and outer shell that can either be zipped together or worn separately.
Outer Layer: An appropriate outer layer is essential for protection against wind and rain. Look for waterproof jackets that are also breathable.

Toiletries and Personal Items
Packing toiletries requires a little thought to ensure you maintain personal hygiene while keeping your bag light. Here are some suggestions:
Travel-Sized Containers: Rather than bringing full-sized bottles, transfer your favorite toiletries into smaller, travel-sized containers. You can opt for small bottles or even those cute (but pricey) magnetic containers. This not only saves space but also weight.
Downsize Items: I know you love your Oral-B electric toothbrush and the Waterpik flosser but surely you can go without those for a week or two right? Just pick up a simple travel size toothbrush and some dental floss picks for the trip and gain a lot of real estate in your bag. Consider alternatives to some items like shaving cream pressurized cans and look for smaller shave soap pucks.
Multi-Functional Products: Opt for products that serve multiple purposes. For instance, a shampoo that doubles as a body wash, or moisturizer lotion that can also work as sunscreen can minimize the number of items you pack.
Keep Essentials Accessible: Store any toiletries you are bringing aboard a plane in a clear, waterproof bag for easy access during security checks at airports. It's also not a bad idea to put any liquids that you have in a packed luggage or toiletry kit into a Ziploc bag too just in case you have one rupture. I know I arrived in Amsterdam one trip and the lid had popped off of my sunscreen and it was all over my jeans. Ugh! Additionally, a hanging toiletry kit makes for a great way to see and have access to all of your items.
Technology and Gear Packing
In today's digital age, packing electronics and gear is inevitable. Here are some tips on effective packing for your tech:
Utilize a Tech Organizer: To avoid tangled cords and ensure that you have all the chargers you need, consider using a tech organizer. They often come with multiple compartments and make everything easily accessible.
Backup Power: If you're traveling to remote areas, ensure you pack a portable power bank. This will help keep your devices charged, especially if you'll be using your phone for navigation or photography. I like the ones that have the built-in lightning cord and USB-C cord like this Belkin Model.
Data Blocker: If you are ever looking to charge your phone using anything other than an electric outlet (with an adaptor as necessary) then you should absolutely use a data blocker to prevent your phone from being hacked with malware or your info stolen. They are inexpensive but are essential.
Bluetooth Trackers: Make sure you can track your luggage from start to finish with these devices. There are a few options out there but the most popular ones would be the Apple AirTags, or the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag.
Post-Packing Checklist for Smooth Travels
Even after you’ve packed your bags, the travel prep isn’t quite over. Timing and detail management are just as important. Here’s how to wrap things up:
Final Check: Take a moment to revisit your packing list before leaving for the airport. Ensure you have everything you need, from your boarding pass to your favorite snacks.
Secure Your Bags: Consider using locks on your luggage. This adds an extra layer of security against theft while you travel. If you do though make sure the locks are TSA compliant.
Leave Space for Souvenirs: If you’re planning to shop while abroad, leave room in your suitcase for any souvenirs or gifts you may want to bring back.
Before You Go: Create a checklist of all things that you might need to do before you set out and use it to help minimize the stress of getting ready. It helps to avoid that nagging worry of whether you left anything on, or forgot to set a light timer etc. Plan it well in advance to cover items that may need additional time such as obtaining prescriptions, arranging pet care, placing a hold on mail.
Stay Organized During Your Trip
Once you've packed for your adventure, the organization doesn't stop there. Implement strategies to keep everything in its place while you're on the go:
Unpack Immediately: When you arrive, take a few moments to unpack your bag. This makes it easier to find what you need without having to sort through everything in a rush. Plus it helps remove wrinkles in clothing if you can hang them up right away. Another benefit is that you can tightly close up your luggage once unpacked thus reducing the chance that you might get any bedbugs coming home with you. I know if I don't unpack I get lazy and sometimes leave my bag unzipped. Fortunately I've not had any bedbug encounters but now I am much more conscious of it.
Keep Dirty Clothes Separate: Use a separate bag for dirty clothes to avoid mixing them with clean items. This is particularly handy in hostels where space might be limited. I personally love having several of these luggage bags or. cubes for travel to store socks, underwear, shoes, and dirty laundry all separately. So much easier to keep things organized.
Review Your Packing List Post-Trip: After returning from your adventure, review your packing list. Note any items that may not have been necessary or anything that you wish you had packed. Obviously this is subject to logic though. Just because it was cloudy your whole trip does not mean you shouldn't pack sunglasses on your next trip. Duh.
By following these tips, not only will you have a smoother travel experience, but you'll also find joy in the excitement of embarking on your next adventure.
