Tips for Traveling with Your Dog
Check local regulations: Some cities have specific rules about dogs in public spaces, such as leash laws or breed restrictions.
Plan ahead for accommodations: Book pet-friendly hotels or rentals in advance to ensure that your pup will have a comfortable place to stay.
Pack accordingly:
Collar with ID tags: Make sure your dog’s collar has up-to-date ID tags with your contact information. Include a tag with your travel destination and phone number, if possible.
Leash and Harness: Bring a sturdy leash (preferably two: one standard, one retractable) and a comfortable harness for walks. Consider a no-pull harness if your dog tends to tug. You may also want to bring along a tie down type with a stake if you want to be able to secure the dog in a picnic spot or camping site and let them have a bit of roaming space.
Microchip Information: Ensure your dog’s microchip information is up-to-date before you travel. Carry a copy of your microchip registration details.
Vaccination and Medical Records: Keep a printed or digital copy of your dog’s vaccination records, especially proof of rabies vaccination, which may be required by hotels or boarding facilities.
Flea, Tick, and Heartworm Preventatives: Don’t forget your dog’s monthly preventatives if you are going to be away for a dosage period, especially if traveling to areas with a high risk of ticks, fleas, or mosquitoes.
First Aid Kit for Dogs: A basic pet first aid kit should include items such as:
Bandages, gauze, and adhesive tape
A tick remover
Hydrogen peroxide for wound cleaning
Antiseptic wipes or spray
Benadryl (for allergic reactions and it can also be used as a calming agent if your dog gets car sick, but check with your vet for the proper dosage)
Dog-safe scissors
A thermometer (make sure it's labeled for pet use)
Medications: If your dog takes regular medication, pack enough for the entire trip, plus a few extra days' worth in case of delays. Keep medications in their original packaging and make sure you have the necessary prescriptions for international travel.
Crate or Carrier and Dog Bed: If your dog is crate-trained, bring a travel crate or carrier that meets airline standards (if flying) or is comfortable for car travel. Soft-sided carriers work well for smaller dogs, while a hard-shell crate is ideal for larger dogs. My dog sleeps in her crate at home so for her bringing along a crate makes her feels completely comfortable sleeping in a hotel room. We have two of the same crate, one is larger for her permanent sleeping area in the house and the other is smaller (but big enough she can get up and turn around in) that we use for in the car and the hotel room. We have a dog bed that is custom designed to fit into the crates as well so she is all set.
Blankets and Towels: Pack a few blankets and/or towels for your dog to rest on, cover car seats, or use for impromptu cleanups after a muddy walk or swim.
Seatbelt Harness: If traveling by car, a seatbelt harness for dogs will keep your dog safe and prevent them from moving around too much during the drive. I have a smaller travel crate that I bring along that I can strap in with a seatbelt. It makes her more comfortable during the ride.
Travel Bowls (Collapsible): Collapsible bowls are essential for feeding and watering your dog on the go. They take up minimal space and can be packed in your bag for hikes or long car rides.
Dog Food and Treats: Bring enough of your dog’s regular food for the entire trip, plus a couple of days extra. Sudden dietary changes can upset their stomach, so it's better to avoid buying new brands while traveling. As someone who has experienced an adverse reaction in their pet all over the hotel floor this is a very important point! Pack some of their favorite treats for rewarding good behavior and keeping them calm in new environments. You can always do a bit of research for your destination and see if any of your regular pet stores are there just in case you need to get more.
Water Bottles and a Water Dispenser: Stay hydrated! Pack a couple of water bottles and a portable water dispenser or collapsible bowl for walks, hikes, and long car rides. I am not a fan of the dispensers ads they tend to leak all the time so I keep a collapsible bowl on a carabiner with me at all times.
Chew Toys and Interactive Toys: Pack a few favorite toys to keep your dog entertained during downtime. Interactive toys like puzzle feeders can help mentally stimulate your dog and alleviate boredom especially if you leave them in the hotel room for any length of time. We like the treat tornado toy personally. That keeps her entertained for a while at least. We try to avoid squeaky toys though as we don't want to annoy the neighbors and we don't bring the stuffed ones since that just results in a padding nightmare in the hotel room once the pooch inevitably obliterates it.
Poop Bags: Pack plenty of biodegradable poop bags and a dispenser to make sure you're ready for cleanups wherever you go. They have some nice ones that will clip onto a belt loop for easy carrying.
Wipes and Towels for Clean-Up: Dog-safe wipes are perfect for quick clean-ups after a messy adventure. Consider travel-sized, eco-friendly grooming wipes or hypoallergenic baby wipes.
Brush/Comb: Bring your dog’s brush or comb to keep their coat in good condition, especially after outdoor adventures. This helps to remove dirt, debris, or loose fur. This is particularly important for doodles. Man does her hair get matted quickly!
Dog Travel Bag: A dedicated travel bag for your dog can help keep all their essentials organized and accessible.
Optional Items Based on Circumstance
Dog Backpack or Saddlebag: If you’re planning hikes or outdoor activities, a dog backpack or saddlebag can be helpful for your dog to carry their own water and treats. Make sure it’s properly fitted and not too heavy for your dog.
Booties: If you’re traveling to a hot or cold climate, consider packing protective booties for your dog. These help protect their paws from hot pavement, icy terrain, or rough trails. You can also bring along some moisturizing cream like Mushers which helps protect those foot pads. This is a must have if you are walking the dog in winter in a place that uses salt to keep the sidewalks safe.
Life Jacket (for water activities): If your travels involve swimming, boating, or other water sports, consider bringing a dog life jacket to keep your pup safe in the water.
LED Collar Light: For nighttime walks, an LED collar light or reflective harness ensures your dog is visible and safe after dark. As an added bonus your dog will be all set for hitting the next rave.
Portable Fencing or Playpen: For longer stays or camping trips, portable fencing or a travel playpen gives your dog a safe space to move around without a leash.
International Travel
Copies of Vaccination Records: Some hotels, airlines, or destinations may require proof of vaccinations. Bring a copy (or digital version) of your dog’s shot records, including rabies and any other required vaccines.
Pet Passport (International Travel): For international trips, you may need a pet passport, which includes documentation like vaccination records, health certificates, and other requirements specific to your destination.
Veterinarian Contact Information: Write down your regular vet’s contact information, as well as the contact info for an emergency vet clinic near your destination.
Travel Insurance: If you are leaving your home country, consider getting pet travel insurance that covers potential health issues or emergencies while you’re away from home
These cities go above and beyond to make sure your pup is as welcome as you are. Whether it's a walk through historic streets, a romp on the beach, a run through heavy forests or enjoying a relaxing café, these dog-friendly destinations are perfect for an adventure with your best friend. Be sure to check out our blog post on some of the airlines regulations for traveling with your dog. Some airlines have changed their policies recently and you may find yourself unable to bring your pooch on a given flight.
This post is dedicated to Bibbio, a delightful dog we saw several times in Venice.
Puppy Travels!
Il Digestivo
Planning on partaking in peregrinations with the precious pup? Consider some of these items:
Collapsible Pet Bowls
These are the best to have on hand for travel rather than hauling the large ones we have at home. The carabiner on them makes them ideal to attach to a backpack for day hikes and the like.
Outward Hound Puppy Tornado Treat Puzzle
This toy kept her busy for a while and gave her something to do when we were out of the room. Highly recommended to help overcome boredom for active pups.
MidWest Double Door iCrate Dog Crate, Includes Leak-Proof Pan, Floor Protecting Feet
We love this crate and so does the pup. We have two of them actually, one that is a medium size for the road trips and one large one that she uses as her home bed. She is so comfortable in it that one night when I was working late on the computer I went to put her outside and she'd already put herself to bed in the crate. It is her happy place. The two door access is really nice so you can orient it in a room or vehicle much easier and it flattens down for easy carrying.
MidWest Dog Bed
The same company also makes a bed that fits perfectly into their crates. They have elastic straps at the corners that you can slip under the leak-proof pan in the crate to hold the bed in place. 100 % machine washable & dryer friendly. Available in different sizes and colors.
