Just picture it. You are sitting by the Seine river in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower and once you finish off your glass of Bordeaux you take a leisurely dip in the waters below. Sounds like a fantasy, right? As of now, yes, but perhaps in 2025 it may become a reality just over a century after it was banned in Paris in 1923.
To Clean a River
The Purpose
Paris has been working overtime the last year to clean up the Seine river for a few reasons, the biggest one being the looming 2024 Summer Olympics starting July 25. Why the fuss?
The reason is that they want to be able to hold swimming events in the Seine, in particular the triathlon. Before the clean-up this would have been an invitation to disease and disaster. Remember Rio 2016 and all the concerns that the athletes would fell ill?
The Pollution and Sources
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a totally recent program and it was not started with the Olympics in mind. Paris has long sought to clean up the Seine with programs that began in the late 1990's. But even with the work over the last two decades, the pollution levels of the river are still excessive some days, especially after heavy rainfall overloaded the sewage processing centers allowing untreated waste to flow into the river directly. With that in mind the biggest investment now is going into the creation and/or update of sewage processing centers that can handle the excessive flow that is associated with heavy storms.
There are many other sources of pollutants entering the waterway as well, some legal (albeit maybe not anymore) and many illegal. There have been a slew of new projects to connect thousands of houses to newer sewer lines which are less likely to be push beyond capacity during rainy days. Some of those older houses still drain their raw sewage directly into the river. The city has also cracked down on the various boats that use the river and who previously would just dump their waste directly into it. They are now required to connect to a sewage facility to remove any waste generated.
In addition, the river is used as a dumping ground by the Paris residents, not all of them mind you, but enough that there are roughly 350 tonnes of waste recovered from the river each year. Old fridges, televisions, monitors, bikes, etc. you name it, they've probably hauled it out of the river. Human bodies even, you ask? Well, not so much today, but it was indeed common practice during the French Wars of Religion which were a series of civil wars between Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots) from 1562 to 1598.
So in addition to new regulations and investments, there needs to be a mindset change in the residents as well to make this dream possible. Make no bones about it, this is not a small venture; it is grandiose in its vision and its cost. Tagged at well over a billion Euros, it is a mission that France cannot accord to fail. The world, after all, will be watching.
The Benefits
Short vs. Long Term Aspirations
While the short goal is to have the Seine clean enough to swim for the Olympic athletes this summer, the long term goal is to have this waterway accessible to the general public sometime in 2025. It would not be everywhere of course as that would be dangerous with the high number of boat traffic seen on the river and areas of dangerous currents. There would be stations along the river where it would be permitted and regulated. These would be enclosed areas to prevent too strong a current and the protect swimmers from boat traffic and they would also include spaces for changing, showering, and storing belongings. There would even be lifeguards stationed for additional safety. Some of the proposed locations are:
Bras de Grenelle: Iconic Tower Views and Vibrant Atmosphere
Situated close to the Eiffel Tower, Bras de Grenelle will offer swimmers breathtaking views of one of the world's most iconic landmarks. This location is set to become a hub of activity, where the charm of swimming in the Seine is complemented by cultural events and recreational activities along the riverbanks. It's the place to be for those who want to combine their love for swimming with the vibrant energy of Paris
Bercy: A Hub for Sports and Recreation
The Bercy area, known for its park and sports facilities, will further cement its reputation as a go-to destination for sports enthusiasts with the addition of a public swimming venue. Positioned on the right bank of the Seine, near the 12th arrondissement, this venue is expected to cater not just to swimmers but also to those interested in other water sports. Its proximity to the Bercy Park and other local attractions will make it a versatile spot for family outings and fitness buffs alike.
Bras-Marie: Historical Charm Meets Modern Aquatic Leisure
Nestled within the heart of Paris, the Bras-Marie area is set to embody the city's ambitious vision of harmonizing historical charm with sustainable urban living. Opposite Ile Saint-Louis, on the right bank, swimming will take place in front of one of the most beautiful monuments in Paris; the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral. With its picturesque views of the Seine, this locale is poised to become a vibrant nexus for both locals and tourists, offering an idyllic spot for swimming and a range of aquatic activities.
Bras de la Marne: A Natural Retreat
Located in the eastern part of Paris, Bras de la Marne is anticipated to be a serene getaway for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. With its natural settings and cleaner waters, it's perfect for both leisurely swims and more rigorous aquatic activities. The area around Bras de la Marne is also expected to see enhancements in green spaces, making it a perfect spot for picnics, jogging, or simply soaking in the tranquil vibe of the surroundings.
Other Benefits
It's pretty obvious that living next to a clean, or at least cleaner, river has health benefits outside of taking a dip. Gases and odors emanating from the surface flows would be less common, as would the risks of raw sewage invading homes during flooding events. The fish and other wildlife dependent on the river would certainly fare much better. In fact, a decade ago the number of fish species in the river was recorded at around 32 with Atlantic salmon being seen for the first time in over a century. That is impressive considering the number of species that were extirpated (yes, it is a word) from the Seine river during the highly toxic 1960's and the decade followed. It may have dwindled down to as few as two species.
So What's Next?
2024 Olympics
This will be the first real test of the Parisian clean-up plans. Will they succeed in making the Seine a safe place for the athletes to compete in such events as the triathlon? Will the weather throw a wrench into the monkey works and overwhelm the new and improved sanitation stations? Only time will tell. They have about 3.5 months left to make it work at the time of this writing. Interested in going to see the Olympics and are hoping to get tickets? Check out their website and see what is still available. Some additional tickets may be released for sold out events so if you don't see what you are looking for then put your email and name in for alerts.
Future Possibilities
As was indicated earlier, the intent is to make this experience open to the public in 2025 with at least three sites and likely more to follow as Paris continues to invest in making the Seine a place of recreation once more. So what are the repercussions outside of Paris? Surely other major cities with heavy pollution might look to Paris and see that it is indeed possible. Just imagine the Thames in London, or the Hudson in Manhattan being clean enough to do the same. Yes, NY, I know some people claim you can safely swim there but, really, if a website about it says you should avoid getting your head wet, keep your mouth closed, and rinse off immediately after exiting, I would not consider that a safe swim, would you?
Summary
I do wish Paris well in their endeavors to achieve their goals. I also wish that the other cities can hold up Paris as an example that it's possible, and it will drive a competition world-wide to have the cleanest river flowing through a major city center. I hope it will inspire new technology to make these kinds of task more efficient and effective. Ultimately I hope the project to be a "Triomphe" and that the world does not let the sun set on this wonderful idea of clean rivers...(see what I did there?).
Il Digestivo (Le Digestif)
If you do decide that a swim in the Seine is in your future, as I know it will be in mine, then you should consider a couple of factors.
First: Next year there will be additional requirements for entry into Europe for citizens who previously did not require Visas. This includes Canadians, Americans, and the like. Read about the upcoming changes on our blog about the new ETIAS regulations coming in 2025.
Second:
Gotta brush up on the French. Granted, most of the Parisians speak English but if you can and do try to speak French they truly appreciate it. Try DuoLingo for free to get you to conversational levels. I love this app. I am actually improving my Italian before my trip to the Amalfi Coast this summer.
Third:
Things you might need for your swimming trip to Paris:
Clarks Women's Breeze Sea Flip-Flop
You're going to need a sturdy and comfy flip flop to get from the changing room to the river. These are perfect for that job. They are lightweight and cushioned with the ability to adjust fit using velcro straps. A must for any beach or riverside visit. With a wide array of color choices you can find a couple of pairs that complement any of your swimwear choices.
Men's (* Unisex really) Adissage Slides Sandal
My favorite water/shower shoes. Comfy, solid. I have a couple of pairs for both beach and gym. I love the bumpy interaction with the foot as I get so annoyed with my foot sliding out of the sandal. (for women’s sizing order 1-1.5 sizes down).
Eomenie Women's One Piece Tummy Control Cutout High Waisted Bathing Suit
Time to get a new swimsuit for the summer! Criss cross one piece bathing suits: Cutout design on front and back, adds a little flirt and fashion to this classic swimsuit. Ostrichpillow Contoured Sleep Mask
Before swimming in the Seine you've got to get to Paris first, right? Make sure you can get a good snooze on the plane trip. Say goodbye to awkward fitting sleep masks that let light filter in, or that press uncomfortably on your eyelids. The modal foam mask is adjustable and has a solid 3 dimensional design that fits the contours of your face beautifully. There is even an eyecup built it to alleviate any pressure on the eyelids. Blink in bliss!
BCOZZY Wraparound Neck Pillow
If you are lucky enough to be flying long haul in a lie flat bed, you can get a good sleep with the pillows the airline provides. For the rest who have to try and arrange their body in a barely reclined position you need to up your pillow game. Personally speaking the thing that makes my sleep nightmarish on a plane is the head bob forward always wakes me. I need a wraparound that will prevent my head from dipping forward too much when I sleep. This BCOZZY pillow does just that.
