A Luxurious Cavern - Image by Author
A Luxurious Cavern - Image by Author

Cappadocia is famous for its surreal landscapes of soft rock formations known as fairy chimneys, which have been carved into homes and BnBs for centuries. The cave pensions offer a unique experience, where guests can stay in rooms hewn directly from the surrounding rock. Many of these pensions feature luxurious interiors with modern amenities while preserving their ancient charm. There are several to choose from so do a little bit of searching to find the one that is just right for you.

Surroundings: Cappadocia is particularly its famous hot air balloon rides over the "fairy chimneys" and valleys and this activity is a definite must if visiting the Göreme area. Explore the Göreme Open-Air Museum, an ancient monastery complex, and the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı. I have been to Derinkuyu and it was amazing but not good for anyone who might suffer from claustrophobia or who may have mobility issues as it is some pretty narrow maneuvering within and some steep passages. It is an extraordinary ancient underground city located in the Cappadocia region of Türkiye. Discovered in 1963, it is one of the largest and most complex of the many subterranean cities in the area, believed to have been constructed during the Byzantine era as a refuge from invasions. Carved deep into the soft volcanic rock, Derinkuyu extends up to 85 meters (approximately 279 feet) below ground, comprising multiple levels of tunnels, living quarters, kitchens, storage rooms, and even chapels and schools. It is thought to have housed up to 20,000 people, offering protection from hostile forces. Ventilation shafts and an ingenious water system allowed inhabitants to survive for extended periods underground. Today, Derinkuyu is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into the ingenuity and resilience of the people who once inhabited these vast underground chambers.

Cost Estimate: Around $80 to $200 per night, depending on the pension and season.

Trivia: The region has hosted countless celebrities including Russell Crowe, who filmed The Water Diviner in the area.
